Drug Disclosure

Premiere International College has a professional and ethical responsibility to ensure students are safe to provide nursing care Premiere International College defines impairment in accord with the Board of Nursing Regulations Chapter 464.018.
  • "Being unable to practice nursing with reasonable skill and safety to patients by reason of illness or use of alcohol, drugs, narcotics, or chemicals or any other type of material or as a result of any mental or physical condition."
  • When impairment is the result of suspected or known substance abuse, the faculty shall refer the involved student to the Dean or Dean's designee. The Dean or Dean's designee shall refer the student to the Florida Intervention Project for Nurses (FIPN) for assessment and evaluation as described in the Board of Nursing Regulations Chapter 464.0185. At such time that the student is referred to FIPN, the student’s enrollment shall cease. The student will also be assessed and evaluated by the school’s administration. If the student is allowed to continue in the program, staying in the program will be dependent upon the student remaining free of all mood-altering, controlled, or addictive substances. The student must also complete any recommended treatment and be physically and mentally able to meet the objectives of the program by providing safe, competent nursing care.
All applicants that are accepted into a Nursing Program at Premiere International College must complete a 10-Panel Drug Screening. Applicants that fail the Drug Screening without prescriptive documentation will be automatically withdrawn from the program.

Drug Free Policy

  • Premiere International College is concerned about the potential adverse effects of alcohol or other drug use on student health and safety, as well as academic performance and patient care. Students are expected to report to class and clinical rotations in the appropriate mental and physical condition conducive to learning. As required by the Federal Drug Free Schools and Communities Act Amendment of 1989, you are hereby notified by Premiere International College that while on campus premises, clinical sites, or at other institute sponsored events and activities, drug and alcohol use will not be permitted. Students shall be prohibited from working, attending school, participating in clinical rotations, or attending Premiere International College related functions while under the influence of alcohol and/or illegal drugs. The use of such substances by students on premises or at Premiere International College related functions shall be prohibited. Such conduct by a student shall be considered a critical offense and result in expulsion.
  • Smoking of tobacco on Premiere International College campus is strictly prohibited and may result in disciplinary action. All students must sign the drug free policy agreement before enrollment with Premiere International College. Those students wishing to smoke must do so off of campus grounds, this includes the parking lot. Student should be aware that persons smelling of smoke may not be able to attend clinical. If you are sent home, your program attendance policy will apply in regard to the absence.
  • Premiere International College will conduct regular and random drug screens on all students attending to the institution. Students who fail a drug screen and cannot provide appropriate documentation will be automatically dismissed from the institution. Students who refuse or disappear during drug screening will be automatically dismissed from the institution.

Medical Marijuana Disclosure

  • A student may get a certification from a physician that he/she has a “debilitating medical condition” that requires medical marijuana however Florida law still prohibits licensed health care providers from being impaired at work.
  • The law regulating licensed health care professionals prohibits practicing with an impairment or while impaired. A recent bill proposed in the Florida Legislature would attempt to define the term as follows:
    • “Impairment” means a potentially impairing health condition that is the result of the misuse or abuse of alcohol, drugs, or both, or a mental or physical condition that could affect a practitioner’s ability to practice with skill and safety.
    • Under current Florida law, Section 456.072(1)(hh), F.S., sets forth, as grounds for disciplinary action against a health care practitioner, being terminated from a treatment program for impaired practitioners, which is overseen by an impaired practitioner consultant, for failure to comply, without good cause, with the terms of the monitoring or treatment contract entered into by the licensee; or for not successfully completing any drug treatment or alcohol treatment program. Similarly, there are requirements for health care practitioners to report other practitioners who may be impaired.
  • Premiere International College College cannot employ nurses, staff, or have students who may be impaired by the use of medical marijuana. Students must understand that if they test positive for marijuana, under any circumstances including medical marijuana, they will be dismissed from Premiere International College.
